THE BIOTECHNOLOGY COMPANY ICELL COLLABORATES WITH QUALITY SALMON SOTENAS

The letter of intent was signed by iCell Sustainable Nutrition, Hong Kong and Quality Salmon Sotenas on 13 September 2020. According to the agreement, iCell will build and be responsible for cleaning and nutrient recovery of water by extracting proteins from recycling aquaculture, salmon farming and production facilities.

- We are honored to have been selected by Quality Salmon, says Mark Rottmann who is CEO of iCell.

- iCell has the most complete recycling method available today for land-based recycling aquaculture systems.

- We have many years of experience in producing unicellular proteins from all types of food process water. Quality Salmon thus has access to proven technology and a similarly proven business partner.

- The project also opens the door for iCell to establish itself and grow in Scandinavia. Quality Salmon will also be iCell's entry into the European market.

iCell's technology is mature and commercially established in Asia. The company works with food industries around the world that need help managing their process water.

When fully developed, Quality Salmon's industrial park will cover 140 hectares and produce up to 100,000 tonnes of Atlantic salmon per year. The industrial park will include all functions and the production will be almost entirely a circular economy that includes feed factory, salmon farming, slaughter, processing, handling of residual products and water purification.

The seafood industry is facing extensive changes due to growing activity in land-based farming and it will be important to develop and put new solutions into operation.

The new land-based plantations are water-intensive. Therefore, Quality Salmon's close collaboration with iCell will be crucial to ensure 100% nutrient recovery and water recycling of the recycling aquaculture system (RAS). iCell's method handles all water that comes from aquaculture, cultivation and production. What would have become sewage sludge is instead converted into unicellular protein.

- This will be crucial to achieve the goal of establishing a blue-green circular industrial park for salmon farming with zero emissions. In addition, the industrial park makes a positive carbon footprint because we use 100 percent green energy, states Roy W Hoias, CEO of Lighthouse Finance and Quality Salmon Sotenas.

- The commitment from both parties further strengthens the foundation for moving forward with more industrial partners and suppliers.
